INTERMEDIATE COMPOSITION
From Fishing to Neuroscience
I have never liked English classes. I actually despised writing 2-3 page papers in my middle school English classes. I did not understand the importance of reading and writing essays, even up to taking this course. Due to my prejudicial opinions coming into this honors seminar, I decided to completely erase my brain of my prior experiences writing papers in English courses. I came into the course with a positive attitude and a goal to write quality papers. After the first week, I had already developed a new goal for the course. I wanted to write a paper substantial enough to submit the paper to a contest.
I began writing my first paper in my comfort space. I decided to write about fishing, one of my favorite hobbies. I learned how to write about my literacy of fishing through the readings in the class, and I went to work. I received a grade on this paper that I was satisfied with, but I realized that I needed to perform better in order to write a paper sufficient enough to be submitted to a contest. The second essay assignment proved to be my most difficult. Writing a comparative genre analysis was a completely new adventure for me. With a lot of preparation and hard work, I wrote an essay that I did not think was satisfactory. After receiving my grade, I was ecstatic. I received a very good grade, and my professor suggested that I submit the essay to the UC Spring Writing Contest.
The final essay assigned in the course, an ethnography of a discourse community, made me comprehend the importance of writing. This was the first real research project that I have undertook. I was nervous, as this process was completely new. I decided to analyze my neuroscience course. The research project consisted of interviews and analysis of course documents. I enjoyed the process, but once again, I was not completely confident in my work. I was fortunate enough to receive a very good grade, and I will submit my essay to another writing contest in the fall of 2021. This class, and more specifically, this project, allowed me to realize how reading, writing, and researching can allow individuals to find insightful proposition's and purposes that can be very impactful in certain regards. Throughout this course, I developed an interest in the research process. I also became a much better writer, something I will be very thankful for in my upcoming career.
